In this week’s blog, IMF Chairman of the Board and Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Brian G.M. Durie tackles yet another COVID-19 variant—BA.2.86 (nicknamed “Pirola”) is now being closely monitored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While there have only been a few cases reported worldwide, the global scientific community is highly concerned about this variant’s “highly mutated” characteristics. WHO has classified BA.2.86 as a “variant under monitoring,” while the CDC has released a risk assessment report indicating the presence of BA.2.86 in a U.S. wastewater sample. Amid these ongoing developments, Dr. Durie strongly advises myeloma patients to practice caution and due diligence—to stay updated on COVID-19 community levels, wear reliable N95 masks in situations of risk, and get tested if symptoms emerge. The IMF will be closely monitoring updates and relaying important information on new COVID-19 variants and subvariants, as well as updated vaccines and boosters. READ NOW.
For Blood Cancer Awareness Month 2023, the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF) is reviving and amplifying its highly successful #kNOwMyeloma campaign, which centers on the question: "Do You Know Myeloma?" Our goal is to foster active and interactive participation by motivating individuals to ask questions and to educate themselves about multiple myeloma, and by encouraging them to share these learnings with their communities via social media. Our hope is to raise awareness about multiple myeloma within the broader blood cancer community. We also aim to inspire the myeloma community to continue advocating for those impacted by this complex disease. Read the full press release to learn more. READ NOW.
